Susan M. Basso

Susan Basso is the Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at the Pennsylvania State University She reports directly to the Senior Vice President for Finance & Business/Treasurer, and is a member of the President’s Council. Overall, she is responsible for the day-to-day management and strategic operations of Human Resources.

In her role, Susan provides strategic leadership and direction in the planning, integration, and implementation of human resources for all faculty and staff at Penn State. Specific responsibilities include: recruitment and compensation, benefits administration, employee and labor relations, professional and leadership development, performance management, occupational medicine, management engineering, and human resource information systems and management.

Prior to coming to Penn State, Susan served for five years as the Associate Vice President for Human Resources at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. Before her assuming her position at Seton Hall, she was in the Pennsylvania State System at East Stroudsburg University for nearly 18 years. Susan served in various roles including Executive Assistant to the President and Chief Human Resources Officer.

Susan has held leadership roles in a number of volunteer organizations and at both the local and regional level of CUPA-HR. She has been a member of CUPA-HR for 15 years and received their Emerging Leader award in 2007. She has held several offices and currently serves as the Treasurer of the Eastern Region Board. In 2012, she was selected to serve on TIAA-CREF’s 26-member National Advisory Council. Susan has authored several articles and has spoken at a number of regional and national conferences on HR transformation and the role of technology.

She has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, with a minor in business administration and finance from Ursinus College. She holds a master’s degree in human resources administration from the University of Scranton.
